Connecting With God:  Communion

COMMUNION is celebrated as the focal point of our worship each week. We practice it weekly as was the pattern in the New Testament (Acts 20:7).   We welcome all believers in Jesus Christ to come to His Table with us!

Communion is a quiet time of mediation allowing us to 'connect' with God.  We do so by remembering Jesus, looking backward at His death and resurrection.  We celebrate the forgiveness Jesus has provided by looking inward at our own heart, accepting His grace through faith.  We also look forward, anticipating Jesus’ promised return to gather His people and take us to heaven.  (See Matt. 26:26-29)

If you want a more in-depth study of communion, please see the following Scriptures.

1. Communion grew out of the celebration of Passover. Ex 12:21-28; 1Co 5:7,8.
2. Christ commanded and instituted it. Mt 26:26; 1Co 11:23.
3. Christ is the object of communion. Lu 22:19; 1Co 11:24,26.
4. Christ’s body and blood are symbolized in communion. 1Co 10:16.
5. Christ used both bread and wine (we use unfermented wine--grape juice) as necessary symbols of the New Testament  Mt 26:27; 1Cor. 11:26.
6. Christ wants us to pursue righteousness, live in right relationship with Him and others, and work through all relationship issues "before" we partake of communion. If we choose not to work through our relationship issues there is discipline.  1Co 11:28,31.
7. Christ wants a newness of heart and life before we partake.  1Cor. 5:7,8.
8. Christ wants partakers to be wholly separate to God. 1Co 10:21.
9. Christ did not say exactly how often communion should be taken. However, the New Testament Church practiced it daily and then weekly.  Ac 2:41-42; 20:7.
10. Christ makes us worthy to partake, but we can partake unworthily. If  we do then we:
          a. are guilty of the body and blood of Christ. 1Co 11:27;
          b. are unable to discern not the Lord’s body. 1Co 11:29; and
          c. are visited with judgments. 1Co 11:30.
